ON THE LOW DOWN WITH ZEE MAKINA

What show do you do?

I present ’The Playroom’, the baddest kids radio show around.

What is the personality of your show, favourite features?

My show is mainly aimed at tweens, children who are not yet seen as teenagers. It is fun and certainly educational as we are dealing with young minds. I only have 2 features on my show, both entertaining in their own way: Takalani Sesame, which is aimed at the younger children puts things simply and it allows us to interact with the children more as we go around and interview the tweens. The other feature ‘State Your Mind’ caters for the older tweens, we tackle every day questions which are constantly on our minds, it is more serious, as we interview experts but yet interesting and fun to listen to.

Who does your show speak to?

Tweens mostly, as it gives children their own platform and time on radio, but parents who listen also do learn a few things about their children and what they face daily.

Who inspired you to join radio and how did you join?

I am young, and I started radio when i was only 11 years old. It was certainly not something I put a lot of thought into, for at 11 all I knew was I was going to be speaking on radio and my friends were going to hear me, I never thought about the work, the preparing, working the desk, the language barriers, how to speak, the rules and actually what I was going to say. My sister and mother are the ones who encouraged me to go for it. We heard an advert on the then CKI fm, it stated that the station was looking for a child to present a children’s show, my mother and sister dragged me to the interview(I was scared, and nervous, and was not sure about it all), I arrived, and was against quite a few other children, I went out of that interview thinking I blew it, but It seems I was wrong, because here I am today.

What else do you do besides radio, your hobbies?

Firstly I go to school, I’m involved in a lot of activities at schools, I play hockey and do a number of cultural activities (I am one of those children who does everything). I never miss out on my TV dates (movie junkie), I shop (a lady has to be presentable at all times) and I sleep if there is time. In all the things I do, you could actually say radio is my hobby, my favourite one that is (I talk a lot)

Besides your own show, which is your favourite trufm show?

I don’t really have a favorite show, but any show brought to you by tru fm I know is worth listening to, we do it like no one else!

Where would one find you on your weekend, what would you be doing and with whom?

During the school term, in the morning i would be at work doing my show, then later on at home busy with my chores, books and television. During the holidays I’d be out and about doing all the things I couldn’t do during the term, going out with friends, having INNOCENT(“,) fun, meeting new people.

What do you like most about Eastern Cape and its people?

The Eastern Cape - I can’t help but be bias towards it, it is home after all. We are a tribal bunch and we are proud. Even though the rest of our country gets modernized we stick with who we are and make it work for us. Yes kusemaxhoseni apha, SO WHAT?

If you could be anyone else who would it be and why?

I don’t know who I would actually be, but it would have to be someone tall, so I can see what the hype is all about!. SO WHAT IF IM SHORT???!

If not radio, what would you be doing?

If I did not have this radio gig, I would sleep for longer every Saturday morning. I have not really thought deeply into what I want to do, but anything that has to do with me speaking, using my voice and people listening to me. Entertainment seems to be catering for that need of mine and perhaps I would venture more into that.
