ON THE LOW DOWN WITH ATHI NXUSANI

What show do you do?

Reconnect 12h00 to 15h00 Sundays

What is the personality of your show, favourite features?

RECONNECT aims to project a family feel and partly old school and laid-back music with an energetic and sparking feel.

Who does your show speak to?

RECONNECT is a cross-genre show; it plays a variety of music that caters for every member of the family and that is Sunday being a family day. The show aims to put a smile on every member of the family; thus the music with a Sunday lunchtime feel and minimal talk back.

Who inspired you to join radio and how did you join?

I have quite a few names to mention like Bob Mabana, Glen Lewis and so on; but one guy whom I have personal contact with is Kevin Potter who not only inspired me but inculcated radio to me as a lifestyle and a job. In terms of how I joined radio… I was doing my final year in High School when I approached the station manager at Khanya Community Radio in Butterworth and explain to him that when I finish my matric I will study versatile broadcasting and therefore could he offer me an opportunity to see if I can really do this thing that I had been dreaming of doing and the rest is history.

What else do you do besides radio, your hobbies?

Besides radio or me being on-air I spend a lot of my time with my research projects that I undertake both under the umbrella of few institutions and independently. In terms of hobbies, I have none that I can think of at this point in time; except the fact that everything I do has somewhat became a hobby for me. The point is, I am very poor in separating career with hobbies unless one is talking about leisure pursuits that I undertake in my free time which I hardly have.

Besides your own show, which is your favourite trufm show?

I listen to every show on the station and love every show; but the show that draws my attention recently is “Ezomoya with Mandla Makubalo”. The thing is spirituality is part of humankind existence; we make meanings of our social realities and situation through religion. But what strike me the most in this show is what I emerges as the “Politics of Religion” resurrecting from the discipline: “Sociology of Religion” a very important aspect in our social life. I see the show as the one that shed light on religious confusions amongst listeners.

Where would one find you on your weekend, what would you be doing and with whom?

I might sound like a boring person here! Except being in the Studio to do the show, I spent most of my time at home with my still very young family. However, at times I will go out with my friends for a chit-chat.

What do you like most about Eastern Cape and its people?

The Eastern Cape has proven me wrong in some of the perception that I had I about it. The Eastern Cape gave me another angle to life which is rather cultivative and progressive. It brought me closer to life, people, and the community with obviously the realization that life is not only about me; but others as well. Secondly, the people in the province have always been focused, that is life is meaningful to them; thus grounded and rooted on the principle of Ubuntu.

If you could be anyone else who would it be and why?

I don’t think I desire to be someone else!; nor do I desire to replica someone else`s persona.

If not radio, what would you be doing?

I hardly imagine myself out of the picture of not only radio; but the realm of media or the day to day practice of communication in general.
