Ulwaluko

Date: May 29, 2015

trufm brings you Initiation School Awareness Campaign

Each year, duringwinter and Summer school holidays, young boys around South Africa go through the custom of “ulwaluko,” a rite of passage from being a boy into manhood. They spend about a month in solitude as part of the procedure, where they are taught life lessons and disciplines of being a responsible and dignified young man.

However, a commission in 2014 found that 486 initiates had died at these initiation schools between 2008 and 2013 as a result of complications such as infection after circumcision. Whenaddressing this issue, people have found it extremely difficult to suggest solutions to traditional leaders and elders in their respective communities because of gender or, in the communities they live in they are considered as not being capable of making informed decisions when it comes to such matters.

Society has become fearful of the consequences of not taking action when comes to this matter, which now requires the attention of the greater society. However, there are still issues that are difficult to talk about given the sensitivity around this secrete ritual.

trufm has a social responsibility to ensure that it plays a pivotal role in the sharing of information and communicating issues around this sacred tradition and its safe continuation. For that reason, an on-air awareness campaign on initiation school will commence on 26 May to 29 May 2015 where various stakeholders will be engaged for listeners to gain more insight and educate society about this custom.

trufm supports ulwaluko and its safe continuation like no one else!
