CD Review: Malik - Mthulise

Malik has finally graduated from an artist known for singing hooks perhaps more accurately , wailing choruses in the songs of more established artists. Tuks and RJ Benjamin would no doubt bear this view out. Who could forget Malik and RJ’s rendition of the heart warming See The Light at the SAMAS?. He no longer features in the shadowy background, invariably the fate of many a talented vocalist angling for a break in the dog eat dog world that is the music industry.

Present at his graduation is, among others of course, Ringo Madlingozi there to give this young crooner a helping hand not to mention, a practiced hand , giving him a nudge towards centre stage. Ringo features with great success in the title track Mthulise urging young men to comfort their weeping women. Here the Daveyton born Malik proves emphatically that he can belt a tune with the best of them as he complements rather than match the more forceful and grunting old hand. With Mazabalazo the first track , of the album he reminds the youth of where we come and turns to the old toy toy for inspiration as if to say brace yourselves for an emotionaly bumpy ride. We are soon yanked back to the reality of present day South Africa through the complementary Ofana Nawe with its heavy western influences. This song would melt the heart of any music enthusiasts with its American rhythm overlayed with Xhosa lyrics.

Malik chastises his age mates through the cover ingane featuring Cook and hauls the model c generation over the coals for loss of culture through apathy and disinterest in African languages the conveyor of old African wisdom. Can he isolate himself? Thandiwe makes this album a possible Mother’s Day present as he pays tribute to his mother a figure whose stabilizing influence seems undeniable in his life. Such sensitivity should endear him to many.

Malik possesses an astonishingly shrill falsetto reminiscent of Maxwell’s breathy tones as he soars to high notes. While he assures the prospective consumer of his awareness of history and culture he nevertheless indulges as many before him the worldly and rhythm and blues obsessed youth of today. His music is a much needed interval and change from the trance inducing sameness of house music those lively floor fillers which offer no time for contemplation. Buy it because here is a vocalist getting a word in edgeways in an on going conversation about who we are. Buy it because he is making a good impression and first impressions last.

replacement wanted for Brenda show

It's been six years since South African pop diva Brenda Fassie died - but she has not been forgotten. The show, Brenda, takes its audiences on a journey through the singer's musical career, from the beginning until her death at the age of 39 in May 2004.

The musical's producers are looking for replacement for the title role, which is played by former Isidingo actress Lesego Motsepe. The award-winning actor, producer and director of the musical, Jerry Mofokeng, said "young hopefuls who can stand in for Motsep." He added "We are looking for someone special, with an incredible spark and ability to sing like Brenda, to come on as the understudy for our full run at the State Theatre, Pretoria."

"So we are having an open audition to find the perfect Brenda, to take part in the audition, go to the Windybrow Theatre in Johannesburg on August 2 between 9am and 4pm.

Thebe warned supporters not to relax

Kaizer Chiefs communications manager Thebe Mohatle has warned their supporters not to be complacent in voting for the Telkom Charity Cup, despite their strong showing so far.

Since the inception of the tournament 24 years ago, Amakhosi have never missed out on the season-opener and they look likely to make it again this year as they are lying second in the voting standings with 31,952 votes, behind Mamelodi Sundowns who have 38,273, and Orlando Pirates were third on the charts with 26,823 votes. Mpumalanga Black Aces were fourth with 19,030 and Ajax Cape Town completed the top 10 with 232 votes.

However Thebe said "Our supporters cannot afford to be arrogant and complacent. "Qualification for the tournament is not automatic and it's important that they vote for us because it would be a tragedy if we don't make the final four teams."

Rangers interest in signing Khumalo & Mphela

Rangers manager Walter Smith revealed Today his interest in signing two of South Africa's World Cup stars Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela.

Talks have already taken place between Ibrox chief executive Martin Bain and representatives of striker Mphela and defender Khumalo, at the behest of the Rangers boss.

Smith said "We are seriously considering both these players,I believe they could fit in well for us. Contact has been made, but we'll need to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks."

Khumalo who has reportedly also attracted the attention of Tottenham, said: "I know about Tottenham and it would be a dream to play in the Premiership. But I also think playing in the Champions League would be special."

Meanwhile Mphela said "I don't want to play in the PSL any longer. I feel I am ready for a move to a bigger league now."

Halle Berry travelling to SA

Halle Berry and her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry were spotted at the airport. She is travelling to South Africa for a three-month shoot of a film, “Dark Tide” and will bring her two-year-old daughter Nahla with her for the length of time.

Berry, who split with five-year boyfriend Aubry earlier this year, is said to have agreed to fly Aubry out to South Africa and pay him to babysit their daughter.

Wyclef may run for President Of Haiti

A Haitian – American multi-platinum recording artist and record producer Wyclef Jean has filled out the paperwork to run for President of Haiti. Jean has not yet confirmed a campaign, but he has filled out the necessary paperwork to run in their November 28 election.

He was born in Haiti and has been heavily involved in his home country's affairs more recently, after moving to Brooklyn in his youth. In 2004 he released an album in Haitian Creole called Sak PasÃ Presents: Welcome to HaÃ¯ti and in 2005 started the Yele Haiti Foundation.

The foundation provides thousands of scholarships to children all across Haiti, and had plans to build schools. But it has also been subject to criticism for perceived corruption and a lack of transparency.

In 2007 he became a roving ambassador for the country and was heavily involved in recent hurricane and earthquake relief efforts, performing benefits and delivering aid and food to the people through Yele.

Illegal tiger on the run in Mnpumalanga

The Mpumalanga Wildlife Management Unit and the province's SPCA were investigating the reported escape of a tiger on Tuesday morning, a provincial wildlife manager said.

Louw Steyn said "I just got a report from the SPCA that the animal escaped from the vehicle. It comes out of the Mpumalanga province and it's not supposed to be there."

He added "I have checked, and there is no tiger registered in our province. We have checked with Gauteng and that tiger is also not registered there."

Henry retired from international football

The 32 year old former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from international football with France. Henry, who has just joined MLS side New York Red Bulls, has decided to call time on his international career after 13 years playing for France.

He began his international career in 1997 making his debut against South Africa and he was a member of the 1998 World Cup winning team and the successful Euro 2000 side. He won 123 caps for France and scored 51 goals for his country to make him the France's top goal-scorer of all time

Prosper revealed a tragic secret

Kelly Khumalo and Prosper Mkwaiwa have been keeping a tragic secret. The ex-couple lost their unborn child but sat on the woeful news like brooding chickens.

Prosper revealed this when asked why he so quickly impregnated his new lover, singer Tina Dlangwana, after he failed to do so with Kelly, who he dated for more than four years.

He said “No, we had something of that sort but we lost it.” He added “I’m still hurting. I don’t wish any man to go through that experience.” The miscarriage happened early on in the pregnancy.

However Khumalo declined to comment on Mkwaiwa’s unborn child incident.

trufm exposes human abuses

trufm takes human trafficking and child pornography very seriously. To show the station’s tru commitment to awareness of these human abuses, trufm partnered with the Film and Publications Board during the FIFA World Cup 2010 to highlight just how easy it is to take advantage of vulnerable people.

Together with well known TV personality Meshack Mavuso, who plays Vusi on SABC3 soapie Isidingo, the campaign was able to reach huge crowds. Feedback from the events were really positive and helped people understand how easy it was to become a victim of abuse, whether it is a child or the parent struggling with the trauma.

The event also offered top entertainment to lift spirits. trufm ensured that South Africans were on their feet, cheering, by top dancer Somizi Mhlongo and his group, who taught everyone how to Diski! trufm also gave back to the community, handing out weekend getaway vouchers courtesy of Films and Publications board and Eastern Cape Tourism board.

Listeners and fans flocked to the specially set up areas where they could enjoy the gees of Africa’s biggest sporting event securely hosted with the help of local councils at Mdantsane, Cofimvaba and Matatiele.

With performances from local music artists Jaziel bro’s, Thebe, Brickz, Psypho and L’vovo Derango – the Public Viewing Events were transformed into mini Fan Fests that brought visitors to their feet with cheers.

trufm made some FIFA World Cup dreams come tru this month when lucky listeners got the chance to board the trubus to matches, Fan Fests and local sporting venues to enjoy the soccer.

trufm’s trubus competition invited fans and dedicated listeners to SMS tru2010 to the radio station. trufm DJs picked phone numbers at random and called some of the SMS entrants who had to answer the phone call with: “I want to get onto the 2010 trubus”.

With the right answer, listeners got a second easy question to determine which World Cup destination prize they had won. Winners automatically scored themselves and a friend seats on the trubus all the way to the stadium to watch a FIFA World Cup match live or they scored themselves two spots at the Nelson Mandela Bay Fan Fest in PE, all expenses paid!

All aboard the trufm trubus, the station’s official wheels carried DJs and winners from PE to Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and then onto M.A.N.S where the game was enjoyed on a big screen. The trubus also visited Queenstown as part of the Youth Day celebrations, stopping at various FIFA Fan Fests to feel the gees and revel in the great entertainment and music extravaganza.

trufm’s popular shows took radio back to the people and made a bee-line for South Africa’s top artistic gathering – the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. trufm’s Top 30 (10h00 – 13h00), Ground zero (13h00 – 15h00), The Real deal (12h00 – 15h00 and The mid morning blend (09h00 – 12h00) broadcasted to locals and revellers with huge success in celebration of the festival’s 36th anniversary.

Just like trufm, the Grahamstown National Arts Festival creates opportunities for young people to showcase their talents providing a platform to express themselves.

With the trufm DJs set up on the festivals Fiddlers Green, station fans felt the full impact of Buffalo City’s best beat masters who delivered a rocking weekend. The fun and excitement continued on at a massive bash hosted at Lounge Around where industry greats Black coffee, Culoe Desong and Durban’s Finest DJ Tira kept it tru on the decks. The 2010 FiFa World Cup is over and South Africa has hosted one of the best tournaments ever. ON and OFF the field it has been a great success. I have never seen South Africans so UNITED and the whole continent UNITED for the common goal to host a memorable World Cup.

It has been a truly unpredictable competition with so called BIG GUNS eliminated in the early stages. Who would’ve thought that defending champions Italy would not even pass the group stage, with favourites Argentina and Brazil falling short too. If I had to predict the two final teams to win, I’d pit Germany against Netherlands at Soccer City on July 11 with the young Germans winning the World Cup on African soil. But as time has passed, we now know who the final two are and who the world celebrates! Viva Espania!

If there is one person to be thanked for this great spectacle, hosted here in Africa for the first time in the history of the World Cup, it is FIFA president Joseph Sepp Blatter. Thank you Mr President. We have felt it. It was here. We will never forget the feeling.

Thank you South Africa for showing your tru colours, every single rainbow one that we proudly keep reflecting to the world. Now let’s wave the trufm flag in tru South African spirit … like no one else and bring on the Olympics!!!

White baby - Black parents

A black Nigerian couple living in the UK got the shock of their lives when the wife gave birth to a white baby girl with blond hair and blue eyes Baby, Nmachi was born to Ben and Angela Ihegboro, who are themselves confused by their daughter's light complexion and fair hair.

When Ben Ihegboro first saw Nmachi, he exclaimed "What the flip? Is she mine?" Then later, after regaining his composure, he said "She's a beautiful, miracle baby and we love her."

Ben doesn't like questions about if he is father, he added “Of course she is mine. My wife is true to me". The couple have two other children who, like their parents, have dark complexions.

Students demanding government to pay millions

Students from the University of Fort Hare in East London marched to the Office of the Premier yesterday, demanding that the government pay millions in bursaries they claim is owed to the university.

Led by the student representative council, students arranged for buses to take them to Bhisho to hand over a memorandum to Premier Noxolo Kiviet. However, Kiviet was not available to accept it. Meanwhile in East London, over 300 students staged a protest outside the campus at around 10am, waving placards asking for intervention from Kiviet and President Jacob Zuma.

SRC deputy secretary Lwazi Rotya, a social science student, claimed that more than 80 percent of students depended on government bursaries and National Student Financial Aid Scheme funding. He further claimed that students now owed the institution close to R7million, as their bursaries had not been paid out by government departments.

He added “We have had close to 20 dropouts because students are frustrated ... one person dropping out is still too much. It’s hard to even access funds for teaching despite the fact that teaching is a scarce skill.”

Luvo wins gold for SA

Luvo Manyonga had a smile as wide as the Rainbow Nation after sensationally winning the long jump gold medal at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada yesterday.

Manyonga produced a final leap of 7.99 metres to take the honours in a pressure situation after Spaniard Eusebio Caceres had put in a final jump of 7.90, to force the South African into a make-or-break situation.

Manyonga said “I dedicate this gold medal to Caster Semenya’s return to international athletics.” “It’s great that she is back in competition and I look forward to seeing her clock some great times in the months ahead.”

Pitso cagey about Mbazo

Bafana Bafana Coach Pitso Mosimane has lambasted reports suggesting he was poised to axe long-time Bafana Bafana captain Aaron "Mbazo" Mokoena.

Pitso said “Journalists are entitled to their opinions, but when it comes to getting your facts back-to-front then it is not only frustrating but downright damaging."

He was referring to a report that suggested he had been a party to depriving Mokoena who recently became the first South African soccer player to be capped 100 times for his country of the captaincy of the national team. The report was referring to the period in which Mosimane assisted Bafana coach Ted Dumitru six years ago.

He added "It is the coach who makes that type of decision and I wasn't the coach, Closer contact with the media could avoid this kind of incorrect information."

FIFA offered SABC mini replica WC trophy

FIFA has presented the national broadcaster (SABC) with a mini replica of the World Cup trophy that says "thank you" from FIFA.

This is a gesture of their appreciation and gratitude to the South African Broadcasting Corporation for its tireless efforts in ensuring consistent broadcasting during the World Cup.

FIFA says the small token of appreciation is meant for the employees and to the nation for all their hard work and effort.

The SABC flighted more than 290 hours of broadcasting on television and radio.

SABC GCEO, Solly Mokoetle said "We are very proud of this, even though it is only a symbol. It represents an acknowledgment of the efforts of SABC employees by FIFA."

He added “we even broke all the South African records on television viewing, of the 11 million people that were watching TV, 76% of them were watching SABC 1.

FIFA delays technology discussion

FIFA will not be discussing goal-line technology when football's rulers meet in Wales this week, contrary to indications by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

Blatter had announced that the controversial issue would be on the menu when he gave England and Mexico fulsome apologies for refereeing errors in their World Cup last 16 defeats to Germany and Argentina respectively.

He said goal-line technology had to be discussed once again at the "first opportunity" and indicated that would take place in Cardiff.

However a FIFA spokesperson said "The first formal meeting where that discussion on goal-line technology could take place is in October."

History tells us that the first people were Africans and by default all people are African. Lifting a hand or picking arms against another African is like picking up arms against your brother or Sister.

Once the Xenophobic attacks left 62 people dead across South Africa in May 2008. Many people have lost their homes and possessions with lives being lost in the process.

The attacks have impact heavily on the country's economy with many people staying away from work.

Be a tru African! Say no to Xenophobia, say no to a war against our brothers and Sisters.

Alicia Keys parted ways with manager

The American recording artist, musician and actress Alicia Augello Cook well known as Alicia Keys has parted ways with her manager, ending a decade-plus business partnership that began at the onset of the singer’s career.

Alicia and Jeff Robinson announced the news in a joint statement, saying their split was "mutually agreed upon and amicable". She will now oversee her own career through her own company AK Worldwide.
