Exactly R9 676 176.21 has been laid out by the government to cover the payment of Jacob Zuma's defence according to a reply handed to parliament on Thursday.

Minister in the Presidency, Essop Pahad, after handing the written answer to ID leader, Patricia de Lille, said that it would be difficult to forecast the possible total expenditure as the trial has not yet commenced because of Zuma's anticipated application to stay the proceedings.

'It is difficult to determine the duration of the trial considering the postponements and other interlocutory proceedings which might arise,' said Pahad.

Essop also added that since the matter was struck off the roll in September 2007, no further request for the Zuma legal team had been made over and above the first figure mentioned.

As it seems the government is still responsible for Zuma's welfare.
