Women gathered to beat out rape

About 100 women and children gathered out over Buffalo Flats yesterday to stamp out rampant rape in the area. Organised by Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre, the meeting at the Ephesians Church – marked by foot-stomping gospel tunes at every opportunity – aimed to raise awareness about how women can protect themselves in order to prevent being raped or, if they are raped, how to go about reporting it and empowering themselves to be survivors.
Masimanyane’s Bertha Kelly said “This campaign comes after we did a survey in the area and found that there was a lot of rape happening here.” “We want to bring this anti-rape message to the people, to provide the community with information so at the end of the day there can be a reduction in the number of rapes, and to strengthen communities in the awareness of rapes happening in their neighbourhoods.”
She added “Here, people use drugs, alcohol … they beat up women and abuse children. It’s so hurtful.”
