NPA appeal Nicholson's verdict

The National Prosecuting Authority filed papers in thePietermaritzburg High Court today seeking leave to appeal against thejudgment handed down by Judge Chris Nicholson earlier this month.

On September 12 Nicholson ruled in favour of AfricanNational Congress president Jacob Zuma’s application to have thedecision by the Scorpions to charge him declared unlawful.

In his judgment, Nicholson said Acting National Directorof Public Prosecutions, Mokotedi Mpshe, should have obtainedrepresentation from Zuma before deciding to charge him.

Zuma faced a charge each of racketeering and moneylaundering, two charges of corruption and 12 charges of fraud relatedto the multi-billion rand government arms deal.

He was charged in 2005, but that case was struck from the roll in 2006. He was recharged in December 2007.

140 killed in Indian stampede

At least 147 people died in a stampede at a temple in the Indiandesert state of Rajasthan as Hindus gathered to begin one of the mostimportant religious festivals of the year, police said Tuesday.

A handful of people fell while climbing a steep slope toward theChamunda temple, sited inside a hilltop fort near the city of Jodhpur,triggering the crush, a Reuters photographer at the scene said.

'People were falling over one another. Many ran but were trampledunder the feet of thousands,' Anubhav, a witness who only gave hisfirst name, said.

Other witnesses said too many people were trying to pass through anarrow part of the climb at the same time. Many suffocated after theyfell.

Soccer star Benedict“Tso” Vilakazi seems to have a passion for sex with underage girls.Sowetan can exclusively reveal that the Mamelodi Sundowns playerfathered a child with a 15-year-old girl when he was on trial for thestatutory rape of another minor.

Vilakazi has played for Bafana Bafana and was a reveredmidfield player for Orlando Pirates before going overseas to play forDanish club Aalborg BK.

He was arrested in February 2005 and charged with the statutory rape of a minor from Rosettenville, Johannesburg.

It has now emerged he was having sex with another 15-year-old from Riverlea, Johannesburg, at about the same time.

The footballer has secretly been paying R1500 a month in maintenance since the girl gave birth to their child.

Somali mom stabbed more than a 100 times

A MOTHER was knifed113 times and her three children – one of whom was disabled – werebutchered in a Queenstown killing so brutal it has attracted theattention of the United Nations.

Since the victims were Somali immigrants, the UN is investigating whether the bloody slaughter was xenophobic.

Sahra Omar Farah, 46, and her children, Mohamed Isse Osman, 19, IbrahimIsse Osman, 14, and their younger sister Asha Isse Osman, 12, werekilled three weeks after emigrating from Somalia to set up a spaza shopin Tambo village, outside Queenstown.

They were found in a pool of blood after children went to their shop to buy bread.
