Rains sweeping East London homes

Heavy rains sweeping East London since Wednesday have flooded houses in Egoli, leaving residents with ruined furniture and putting the lives of children at risk. 

“Izolo”, residents blamed the house builders for shoddy workmanship. Egoli was one of the areas visited by the Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale last week. He looked at poorly constructed RDP houses, and promised to demolish them to build better ones. 

Egoli community leader Joyce Welman said “Water stormed into our homes last night and I have received several complaints from residents,These houses were not built properly as there is no foundation.” 

Daphne Stevens said “I woke up at 4.30am when the rain started, I knew that we will have problems … Within a few minutes water was everywhere ...

FIFA - Vuvuzelas Stay

LOC chairperson Irvin Khoza said they were happy that Fifa president Sepp Blatter had publicly voiced his support for the use of the vuvuzela at the World Cup. 

Khoza were among the dignitaries who witnessed the flag- raising ceremony of the 32 countries that have qualified for the quadrennial tournament. Some countries, including Spain, Egypt and Japan, have complained bitterly about the vuvuzelas, saying the instrument was “too noisy”. 

Khoza said: “Blatter has made it clear that Fifa does not have a problem with the use of vuvuzelas as long as they were not used as a weapon during games.”
