Khabonina’s well into books
Being a dancer and choreographer just was not enough for Khabonina Qubeka.
Now the entertainer, known for her amazing moves on the dance floor, she is also encouraging children to take reading seriously as a lifelong learning-boosting skill.
Qubeka shared her passion with source about books, and the chance to exercise her enthusiasm as a CNA Readathon Ambassador.
"I proposed 'Book Club with Khabonina' as a project where I use EduDance to encourage primary school pupils to read, not because they have to but because they love to."
After her proposal was accepted, Qubeka selected two primary schools, Giyani Primary in Soweto and Albert Street School in the Johannesburg inner city.
"The kids are learning and their literacy is improving," Qubeka says. "I get very hectic with my other work, shoots, dance projects and meetings but I always make sure that I clear my schedule whenever I can make to make time available for the kids.
"My eventual aim is to have them read and even write their own books. There's no limit. Reading, writing and articulating ideas are integral to being literate. Being literate boosts lifelong learning."
